Sharleen Spiteri: Recording new movie songs album at Frank Sinatra studios was real joy

SHARLEEN SPITERI paced the corridors of the iconic Capitol Records recording studio in Hollywood.

The heat was on.

She had just eight days to nail the most ambitious album of her 22-year career. Waiting in the hallowed studio, where Frank Sinatra recorded classics such as Come Fly With Me, were producer Phil Ramone and engineer Al Schmitt, winners of more than 30 Grammy awards.

Sharleen, lead singer of Scottish rock band Texas, finally got the nod. The “boys” were ready for her.

Spectrum Interview

SHARLEEN SPITERI’S father was a merchant seaman, complete with proper sailor’s tattoos. The Texas singer and her younger sister, Corinne, used to wave goodbye to him for three months at a time, knowing that when he came back home to Balloch, near Glasgow, they would have him to themselves for a full month, 24 hours a day.

Eddie’s return would be triumphant, armed with bags stuffed full of presents: exotic clothes; dressing-up garb from different corners of the world; dolls from every country. But it was his big long beard that fascinated Spiteri. She loves men’s facial hair to this day.

“He would go to his bed that night, and in the morning me and my sister would be given a pair of nail scissors each to snip big chunks of hair off. Then he would go and shave and we’d say, ‘Oh daddy, you’re so handsome.’” She smiles. “Some things never leave you.”
