The Herald Magazine, 15 September 2007
It's hardly surprising the pop star has taken this year's style crown.
It's easy to see Texas' lead singer, Sharleen Spiteri, was crowned as The Herald
Fashion Icon this year. Often dressed for the red carpet in a demure suit or little
black dress, this Glasgow-born musician certainly knows a thing or two about style.
Spiteri was chosen above other stylish names such as Kirsty Hume and Shirley Manson
as the most fashionable Scot, announced at the Scottish Fashion Awards ceremony in
Stirling Castle last weekend. But red carpet dressing aside, this diminutive star
is well known for her simple-but-elegant choice in clothes. A trained hairdresser,
Spiteri prefers the immaculately groomed look to anything overtly flashy or trendy.
Indeed her choice of red carpet outfits often includes a black dress or something
Japanese-inspired.
In her videos Spiteri has tried every style from jeans and T-shirt to glamorous dancing
frocks, like the black dress with plunging neckline she wore to dance the tango with
Alan Rickman for the group's 2000 In Demand video.
In 1989 when Texas released their debut single, I Don't Want A Lover, Spiteri's image
favoured the tough-girl look of the era. For that single's promotional shot, she wore
jeans, a top and a leather jacket.
Spiteri retained this casual look for a coumple of years before switching to
something more refined for her videos. Indeed her bronzed appearance in the
Summer Son video surprised her fans.
Off duty, she prefers a chic, casual image. Black, tailored blazers are often mixed
with the perfect pair of jeans to create an effortlessly cool daytime look.
However her trademark has always been those shiny, expertly coiffed locks.
Also Nominated: Kirsty Hume, Kirsty Young, Shirley Manson, Katie Leung, Paolo Nutini,
Gerard Butler, Ashley Jensen, Atta Yaqub and Calvin Harris.
