Sharleen received the
Capital Icon Award 2008. In interview said:
SS - “you know just coming to the awards today, thinking oh great! It’s been a few years, it’s
good to be out and about and record coming out and stuff … And I walked in the door and someone from London
tonight says ‘so your up for an award today!’ I’m like nah! I’m not up for an award and they were like
‘can we do that again?’ I was like I don’t know anything about an award!?!”
So it was a really nice surprise and you know sitting there, but…it was weird because
I had. I guess it’s…I mean good not to know! Just sitting there the whole time thinking…Jesus…I don’t know what to Say! It’s like…”
Female Interviewer – “…anyway eating your chicken and asparagus, minding your own business”
SS – “Yeah! I was getting stuck in, thinking eat my asparagus…be, do what my mother told me”
Male Interviewer tries to butt in…
SS – “and I ate desert as well…if I’d known I had to stand up…!”
Male Interviewer – “tell us about the album”
SS – “emm, Yeah I’ve done a solo record its erm… its, its I would say it’s quite doo wop. 1950s sort of
doo wop, like Elvis, big band, bit of Nancy Sinatra meets Francois Hardy…erm yeah I’m very happy with
it. Loads of brass & strings. It’s good, it’s been a good time, working on it. I produced it myself.
It’s been nice just sort of putting Texas to the side and doing this. It’s a new sort of adventure
and a really big sort of learning curve as well for me to do it this way.”
Male Interviewer – “and is that over for Texas now or are you going to go back?”
SS – “The thing you’ve got to remember after 22 years, you know it’s never!… it’s
there! Everyone kind of felt it was time, kind of… to take a few chances. Everyone felt we
wanted to do a few different things. I guess probably inspire us to, you know… make more
music. So Texas is always there on the back burner, but it was time.
Ally is doing photography, Ally my guitarist. He is actually photographing
loads of bands and he’s done a couple of album sleeves and stuff so that is
quite funny being on that side of it for him.”
Tony one of the other guitarists, he’s got his own, his own band who Eddie our old keyboard player is
in that. They’re doing that together and Johnny and I are still doing writing and stuff so it’s good!”
Male Interviewer – “ excellent”
Female Interviewer – “ we are getting it June aren’t we?”
SS – “Yeah, your going to have it in June”
Male Interviewer – “cool, where abouts you based now? Up in Glasgow?”
SS – “ No, I’ve been in London. I’ve lived in London for 11 years. So yeah, been down here for a long
time and enjoy it…Enjoy living in London. It’s a lot of fun here.”
Male Interviewer – “Excellent, well congratulations. I remember saving up all my pocket
money to get a cassette of Southside”
…laughter all round…
SS – “I like that style. That’s quite good! Actually I think I had to save up my pocket money at
the time as well to get one! Record company wasn’t giving you any free and I was skint…!”
